My First Game Jam

For reference of how new I am to this I made my first scene (ever) only 3 days ago; up until then I've only ever worked in the default scene that's create when you start a new Unity project.

Most of my time went into finding answers for issues or looking at tutorials. Outside of that I probably wasted about 30 to 40% of my time focussing on the wrong things (playing around with particle physics is distracting).

Overall this first game jam was a very fun experience and I'd like thank https://freelivesgames.itch.io/ for hosting it.

I diarised some of my development steps during this game jam and have shared them below - the screenshots above were taken (almost) daily:

Pre 20th:

  • Trying to figure out what my cat-themed physics based game should be about.
  • Pulled in some friends to help me ideate.

20th:

  •     Made base scene
  •     No code yet
  •     Added ambiance sounds

21st:

  •     Added audio for glass tumble, roll & smash
  •     Created glass in blender (first time blender usage)
  •     Tried using glass shader but failed miserably

22nd:

  •     more blender shenanigans
  •     added glass smash effect and object destruction
  •     added hack to remove tumble sound when toppling over edge of table (works sometimes)
  •     randomized colour glasses that kinda look like glass
  •     got blender textures work, almost time to make that cat

23rd:

  •     created cat in blender
  •     added cat walk audio
  •     added walk particles

24th:

  •     made first scene (ever)
  •     added ray-collider check for tumble
  •     created variant prefabs for disco glasses
  •     added UI (reset button)
  •     added heart reaction

25th:

  •     added meows
  •     added "next" scene progression button
  •     removed old input system (fixing issue with keyboard activating ui)
  •     added laser pointer
  •     added new movement mechanic

26th:

  •     created fail/success conditions for each stage
  •     created scene transition (rotating growing paw?)
  •     polish a bit

27th:

  •     added some final touches and pulbished!
